Luxe Wheelworks Tech Journal no.19

These Chris King hubs are the color Pewter.

Chris King uses 17mm axles in its R45 hubsets.

An ultra light aluminum drive shell comes standard on the R45 hubset.

Total weight with HED C2 rims, Wheelsmith DB14 spokes and Wheelsmith alloy nipples came to 1550g.

Here is a picture of the wheels without any photo color modifications.

HED C2 Rims are made with Scandium.  They feature a 23mm wide profile. This wide profile makes them stiffer than other, more narrow rims. The seam is welded and the brake track is machined.

I am building up a carbon Gaulzetti road frame with SRAM Red components.

I decided to put a drop of oil in this plastic cable sleeve.

I'm also greasing the threads on the SRAM Red rear derailleur's barrel adjustor.

Her I am prepping housing for cabling. I use this pick to re-open the ends of the cut cable housing. This is not always necessary.

I route both shift and brake housing on the same plane, on the front of the handlebar. I prefer it this way, personally. Some people prefer their shift cable housing run on the inside groove of the handlebar. That's fine too.

SRAM chains use a quick link connection. These quick links are not re-usable.

The quick link is in place for its connection.

Bring the chain to tension and the link *snaps* together. This is one way of installing a quick link.

I try to cut the cables to identical lengths on all my builds. 30mm is the manufacturer recommended length.

I wrap my bars with the tape rotating in, towards the rider. As such the tape won't bunch at either ends of the wrap causing it to loosen itself off.

These are my new cable end crimpers. I am constantly looking for better tools to use. With every build, I learn something new and begin to think of different ways to improve my process.

This new tool is really nice.

I am looking forward to riding this amazing custom carbon Gaulzetti made by Nick Crumpton.
